Attention All: Critically Low Food Reserves – Call to Action Needed Our food bank is at a critical low level. We are unable to Feed Families that need urgent help with food. Some families and their children have not eaten anything since yesterday, We are being inundated with calls for help. We are not able to assist everyone because of the Food shortage we have currently due to a sharp increase of impoverished families that have become destitute over the last few months. We receive on average 10 to 14 new families across South Africa daily that need assistance, and this is steadily increasing. Two camps have run out of food completely since yesterday. There are currently 45 families that are requesting urgent food and assistance. We need your help to assist these families in their time of need. We rely on our donors to make a difference in our communities in South Africa. Thank you for your support. Please if anyone can donate food urgently, please contact the SAFRP Secretary Audrey on 082 495 0250 or if you would like to make a financial donation please visit our donation page on http://www.safrpsa.org/donate-money.html

If anyone knows or hears of a camp or informal settlement of which the majority makes up minority group people anywhere in South Africa, please let us know so that we can assist these families and add them to our database of camps and informal settlements that we are already aware of. We are appealing to every organisation, church and individual that can either assist, knows of, or has seen a camp, to please let us know, so that our organisation can collaborate to build an accurate data base, and start educating people as to the extent of the problem. Please comment with exact locations, no of residents, and person in charge by inboxing us or e-mail us at office.safrp@gmail.com. We need everyone's help so please share this post so that we can get the greatest reach. PLEASE NOTE: All volunteers! We have been experiencing security issues. People have phone and demanded that our volunteers meet them at night in dodgy places - DO NOT GO OUT AT NIGHT! 1.Please always make sure that you are never alone. Make sure that someone knows where you are going at all times. Your safety means allot and I will never forgive myself if something had to happen to anyone of you! 2. People have been phoning and demanding our volunteer pay over cash immediately - DO NOT GIVE ANY MONEY! There are procedures in place to assist families eg. They have to fill in a signed assistance form, a home assessment should be done first and then and only after you have received all the documentation from the family will they be assisted. This is to ensure that truly needy folk get the help. 3. DO NOT GIVE OUT YOUR ADDRESS! Thank you everyone for all your hard work. I am proud of everyone of you! PLEASE BE SAFE. Leigh xx

Poverty is associated with the undermining of a range of key human attributes, including health. The poor are exposed to greater personal and environmental health risks, are less well nourished, have less information and are less able to access health care; they thus have a higher risk of illness and disability. Conversely, illness can reduce household savings, lower learning ability, reduce productivity, and lead to a diminished quality of life, thereby perpetuating or even increasing poverty. Poverty is often defined in absolute terms of low income – less than US$2 a day, for example. But in reality, the consequences of poverty exist on a relative scale. The poorest of the poor, around the world, have the worst health. Within countries, the evidence shows that in general the lower an individual’s socioeconomic position the worse their health. There is a social gradient in health that runs from top to bottom of the socioeconomic spectrum. This is a global phenomenon, seen in low, middle and high income countries. http://www.who.int/topics/poverty/en/
